Dr. Christian Etter has a degree in Economics and Constitutional Law. As an Ambassador he was the Delegate of the Swiss Federal Government for Trade Agreements and Member of the Executive Board of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) in the Swiss Ministry of Economic Affairs (9/2006-1/2018). He was Chief Negotiator and Head of the Swiss delegation negotiating and concluding Free Trade Agreements with the People’s Republic of China, Canada, the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong/China, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Southern African Customs Union, Egypt, Tunisia and Lebanon. He was Senior Advisor to the Swiss FTA negotiations with Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Indonesia, Chile, the Southern Africa Customs Union and Croatia. During his tenure he was head of the Swiss Delegation to the Joint Committee of the Switzerland-EU FTA of 1972. During the multilateral negotiations of the Uruguay-Round he was the Swiss Chief Negotiator for the General Agreement of Trade in Services (GATS) of the WTO. Since February 2018 he is an Independent Consultant.
