The End of Win-Win

Conflicts and wars are increasing around the world. At the same time, many of the established methods of conflict resolution are losing their effectiveness. The way we negotiate is changing as well: the focus is shifting from values-based to interest-based negotiation.

German former Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was strongly shaped by values. Democracy, human rights, and the rule of law were at its core. What could possibly be wrong with that? Isn't it self-evident that we should stand up for democracy and human rights?

The problem arises when values no longer serve as a source of guidance but become the standard by which other countries are judged. When we elevate our own values and moral convictions to an objective benchmark, we lose touch with reality.

We see this in business negotiations, in politics, and especially in personal conflicts. Those who see themselves as morally superior often try to convince the other side that their own position is the only correct one. More often than not, they fail.
